US President Donald Trump can hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July during his visit to the NATO summit in Europe.
This is reported by The Washington Post, citing sources .
The publication notes that Trump’s interest in the meeting with Putin was publicized among White House employees in March, after “the Kremlin reported that Trump, in a telephone conversation with the Russian leader, sent him an invitation.”
According to the sources of the newspaper, Trump personally asked his assistants to organize a bilateral meeting after he and Putin communicated at the APEC summit in Vietnam last November.
“After that meeting, the president said that he would like to invite Putin to the White House. We ignored this,” the source of the newspaper said.
According to him, at that time key advisers in the National Security Council of the White House were against the idea of such a meeting.
“They decided: Let’s wait and see if he will say it again, “said an employee who, like others, spoke on condition of anonymity,” the newspaper writes.
On the eve Trump said that he could meet with the Russian president this summer.
“It is possible that we will meet, yes,” he said, answering the journalist’s question about whether he would meet with the Russian president this summer.
This is not the first time that Trump is willing to hold a meeting with the Russian president.
As previously reported, Trump previously said that if Russian President Vladimir Putin were present in the G7, they could discuss the situation in Syria and Ukraine.
