Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has questioned the rationale behind the Federal Government decision to want to shut down the land border over smuggling of rice into Nigeria.
On Monday, Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh has stated that plans are underway to close down the Nigerian border in order to curb smuggling of rice.
The plan which has not taking full effect has been criticised Sani, who suggested that government should seek other alternatives than shutting the border.
“It’s wrong to shut down the land borders ‘because of rice smuggling’.
“Our layers of security operatives should be able to combat or prevent smuggling without suffocating legitimate businesses and stifling border communities.”
