The Lagos State Government says all operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps ( LAGESC) must maintain discipline and integrity in carrying out their duties.
The Commissioner for the Environment , Mr Babatunde Durosinmi- Etti, stated this on Wednesday while parading two officers of LAGESC caught for misconduct .
The men , Oduyomi Oluwakemi , with oracle number 193886 ; and Ofoesuwa Oluwayemi , with oracle number 194375 , were arrested in the Apapa area of the state while conspiring with street traders in the area to display their goods illegally on the road median .
The commissioner frowned on the action of the officers and vowed that they would be dealt with according to the environmental laws of the state to serve as deterrence to other officers .
Durosinmi- Etti said , “The government has given LAGESC officials the mandate to clamp down on all violators of environmental laws .“It is disheartening to discover that some officers still indulged in manipulating and contravening these laws .
“It is regrettable that some officers have decided to disregard their training and flout laid down rules and regulations .”
He stated that his ministry would continue to implement government ’s policy of attaining cleaner , healthier and sustainable environment .
The commissioner reiterated that government had committed resources on environmental regeneration to improve the aesthetics of the state , regretting however , that street traders and hawkers had been found to be mainly responsible for vandalising and defacing the environment .
He called on Lagosians to be wary of overzealous officers with dubious intentions, adding that the people should report such characters to the ministry for prompt action.
