Tuesday’s visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Plateau State may have come as a welcome relief to the affected victims of the Herdsmen attack that killed over 100 innocent Nigerians on Sunday.
However, many believed Buhari’s visit doesn’t have any significant impact in changing the situation of things in the state, most especially within the Middle Belt axis, where most of their deadly activities have been perpetrated.
Talkingpoints360.com X-ray some of the reactions that trail the death of the innocent Nigerians in Plateau State.
President Muhammadu Buhari
“I will continue to pressurise members of the law enforcement agencies directly under me by the Constitution as the Commander-in Chief. About eight days ago, we had five hours security meeting of the service chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police.
“What happened here in Jos is very bad. The question of leadership, from your household to whatever you are, is justice. The bottom line is justice.
The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the killing of civilians and destruction of property in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region over the weekend.
We are concerned by the recent increase in armed violence against civilians and call on all political and community leaders to lend their voices to peace and to work together to find lasting solutions to these rural conflicts.
We join President Buhari and others in sending our deepest condolences to the affected communities, and in the desire to see the perpetrators brought to justice and to prevent further violence.
Lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana(SAN)
“Since a group has already claimed responsibility for the heinous crime, we are compelled to request Your Excellency to use your good offices to order the Police to arrest and investigate the suspects.
“At the end of the investigation, the Attorney-General of Plateau State should be directed to prosecute the suspects for conspiracy and culpable homicide.”
Senior Pastor, Dunamis International Gospel Centre, DIGC, Dr Paul Enenche
“Mass killings of human beings, as a revenge for stealing 300 cows from herdsmen. Even if this were true does it justify the killings of lives?
“The person or group that made this statement is still walking free? How can someone compare the lives of human beings with that of a cow.
“You hear a Nigerian saying that attacks on his fellow country man are retaliatory. Yet, he doesn’t support the killing of human being, saying that those who carried out the attacks did it on a revenge mission.
“What are the security agencies doing to this person that has openly confessed he has committed a crime and yet no arrest is made instead innocent Nigerians are being terrorised daily.”
CHAIRMAN of League of Patriotic Lawyers, Mr. Abubakar Yesufu
“President Buhari should wake up as this association is out to tarnish and indeed bring this government down. We urge the security agents to pursue and arrest these bandits terrorizing our fatherland.
“The current murderous acts have given voice to the call to decentralize power and funding of the police force.
Former minister of information, Prof. Jerry Gana
“I hereby join similar voices across the land to call on Mr. President to rise to his moral and constitutional responsibility as the Commander-in-Chief(C-IN-C) to protect Nigerians from these ruthless, inhuman and aggressive attacks against law-abiding citizens. This is his primary responsibility as guaranteed by. The C-in-C must take urgent and decisive steps to put an end to theseacts of cruelty and inhumanity. The perpetrators and their sponsors must be arrested, and brought to justice. Surely, this is the essence of the Rule of Law.
“The citizens of Nigeria deserve full proof guarantee of their safety and security; they seek effective and competent actions to rebuild the confidence that their Leader is capable of defending their citizenship as Nigerians. Mr. President, the buck stops completely on your table. Nigerians expect you to offer the citizens strong assurances backed by concrete actions as a practical demonstration of your sincerity.
Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State
“those who have claimed responsibility for the killings should be arrested. Just like we in Benue have been calling for their arrest for their complicity in the Benue killings.
“What is the government waiting for? It is heartrending that in a country of close to 200 million people this kind of act takes place as if we are still living in the past.
The Pan-Yoruba socio cultural organization, Afenifere
“We are devastated by the genocide that took place in Plateau State on Sunday in which over 200 deaths occurred by eyewitnesses accounts, but the police admitted 100.
“These wanton killings and official irresponsibility portrays Nigeria as a barbaric entity and we Yoruba people are pained living in the same space with the bestial elements who kill innocent people in cruel manner.
“The images of little children killed mercilessly with open skulls make anyone with human blood flowing in his or her veins to shrink. We are further distressed that the response of President Muhammadu Buhari to the murder of hundreds of our citizens did not attract a word of sympathy or regret.
“It is very infuriating that the President’s response and that of Miyetti Allah appeared to have been authored from the same laptop. The Chairman of North Central zone of Miyetti Allah, Danladi Ciroma said the attacks were a retaliation for the loss of three hundred cows.
Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC
“The Nigeria Labour Congress is deeply saddened by the renewed violence in Barkin-Ladi and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State and their environs leading to the killing of over 86 persons by suspected killer-herdsmen at the weekend.
“We are disturbed by the range of targets, the duration of these attacks and the scope of casualties and destruction. Even in a full scale war with another country, the statistics are numbing. ‘Therefore, for the umpteenth time we condemn these killings in their entirety.
“They are senseless and barbaric and threatened to shatter once and for all the bonds of brotherhood and peaceful co-existence.
Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister
”They slaughter believers each day and the best our “Christian” VP can do is attend mass burials. Shame on you @ProfOsinbajo.
”The Living God will punish you for your cowardice and refusal to defend Christians and for your collusion with those that have unleashed genocide on the faithful.”
Peoples’ Democratic Party(PDP)
“The ongoing act of terrorism, reducing it to the activities of politicians even when some people have been considered a special race to be allowed to carry modern and sophisticated weapons to unleash mayhem on innocent locals with impunity.
“We insist that the Lalong government has failed in its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives, and property and should therefore step aside.
“We are aware pressure had to be brought to bear on the governor before he cancelled his planned Russia trip (just to go and watch soccer) where an advance party was already on ground to receive him.”
