Donald Trump has called for the US to immediately deport illegal immigrants, denying them their due-process rights.
“We cannot allow all of these people to invade our Country. When somebody comes in, we must immediately, with no Judges or Court Cases, bring them back from where they came,” Trump said on Twitter.
“Our system is a mockery to good immigration policy and Law and Order. Most children come without parents,” he continued.
The Guardian says Trump’s statement “amounted to a proposal for the suspension of law by the country’s chief law enforcement officer”.
“Political opponents will be furious that that’s even been suggested,” BBC Washington correspondent Chris Buckler said, “but President Trump clearly believes his supporters back his hardline stance.”
Republican lawmaker Justin Amash criticised Trump’s statement by quoting the US Fifth Amendment, saying: “No person shall be… deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”
